Postmortem On A Dead 18uf 660VAC Oil Filled Capacitor

Postmortem On A Dead 18uf 660VAC Oil Filled Capacitor Tube. Duration : 1.25 Mins.

I blew this capacitor, so I decided to see what had happened to it. The top was bulged up to the point of nearly being torn off. A hole had been blasted through the side near the top. Despite the damage, the noise was more of a pop than a bang. The top was cut off and the roll removed from the can for inspection. A nice hole of about 7mm diameter was evident right at the top of the roll, going back about half way into the roll. It is probably no surprise that this cap blew. They were used and old to begin with. I had four in series, and was charging to 6kV DC. This worked several times, but then this failure occurred. There was no trace of hookup from the top terminals to the roll, perhaps these wires blew from the discharge current and the damage proceeded from there. It was fun anyway, but I certainly won't be adding these to my 50uf 6kV bank. Thanks for watching, please Like and Subscribe.
