Tesla coil (powered by one ignition coil)

Tesla coil (powered by one ignition coil) Video Clips. Duration : 4.58 Mins.

This was just for fun and enjoyment on a boring late afternoon... Ignition coil was impressive as power source but lacks the current to really get things going. Primary windings are a bit weak. Stranded 14 gauge wire around 45 degrees at 1/2 inch spacing and made 15 turns. Only had to use 11 to get it working right. Not aware of resonance of primary and secondary coils.. I know there is more improvements here to be made if can get resonance of both coils But as seen you really don't need much to make a tesla coil... Winding the secondary was the part that took most of the time.. I recommend a winding jig! ------------WARNING!!------------ Powering ignition coil from AC mains is dangerous and presents the risk of electrocution, fire, electric shock! Caution should be used! Ignition coil is a Mallory coil (Mallory 29625) oil filled Primary resistance 0.500 Ohms Secondary 12.5K Ohms The AC capacitor is rated 8uF 600V Stripped from a dead 120v 5 hp motor MOT is used between mains and capacitor as charging reflector. This MOT had the secondary windings removed and only using primary side. HV Capacitor bank Leyden Jars are made from five 40 oz beer bottles. Classic foil and saltwater. No doubt MMC's would work better but I keep it as cheap as possible. Warning! HV storage bank presents a risk of electrocution and packs a hell of a bite! Use caution around HV Capacitors! Secondary is 800 to 970 turns of enamel coated magnet wire 26 or 28 around a 4 inch waste pipe (Black) Spark ...
